THE NEW AUSTIN AND MG MAESTROS

Innovation, advanced technology, aerodynamic style, versatile packaging and exceptionally low running costs are the hallmarks of the Austin Rover Group's exciting new Maestro, a compact, five-door, front-wheel-drive hatchback which, by virtue of a specification which transcends the traditional sector split, will forge a broad arrow into the medium sector market.

Maestro's seven model range, from a 1.3 litre standard model to a sporting 110 mph plus MG 1600, is designed to capture sales from both the lower medium and upper medium sized cars in the middle ground of the new car market, a section which accounts for 60 per cent of all new car sales in the UK.

Maestro's advanced specification and wide appeal will push the Austin Rover Group firmly into contention in the medium sector and is essential to the company's forward profitability plan, promising a favourable increase in market share.

Outstanding technological features incorporated in Maestro include:

  • Microprocessor controlled Engine Management package incorporating electronic fuel control and breakerless ignition
  • Solid state electronic instrumentation
  • Voice synthesis
  • Body colour, integrated moulded bumpers

  • Flush glazing
  • Homofocal headlamps
  • White light front indicator lamps
  • Low rolling resistance economy tyres
  • Aerodynamically efficient shape

This remarkable combination of advanced features helps to position the Austin Rover Group firmly amongst industry leaders in technology.

Maestro the Computerised Car

Electronic Engine Management on Maestro's carburetter engines gives the efficiency benefits of electronic fuel injection without the cost.

An on-board microprocessor avoids fuel wastage by controlling an automatic choke to meter the exact engine condition and control the mixture accordingly, by cutting off fuel on deceleration and, by means of an electronic idle speed control, by reducing engine idle speed.

High energy breakerless ignition is included in the management package for improved efficiency and for consistency in service.

This unique Engine Management system is fitted to all Maestros except the high performance MG.

Maestro the Talking Car

Maestro is the first European built volume production car to offer voice synthesis as standard equipment.

Maestro actually talks to the driver, asking him or her politely, in a calm, female voice, to "Please fasten your seatbelt", or to warn of abnormal running conditions like "Handbrake on".

The 32-word voice synthesis unit supplements the electronic instrument pack and trip computer of the Vanden Plas and MG Maestro by monitoring selected operating functions and providing audible warnings when necessary. It is available as an option on some other models.

The advanced, solid state electronic instrument system has no moving parts-other than for the mileage recorder and has a processing capacity about twice that of an advanced home computer system.

Vacuum fluorescent displays are used for speed, engine revs, temperature and fuel tank contents.

The display can be converted to and from mph to kph by the push of a button.

Rev Keith Osmund-Smith - October 9, 2021

We had a couple of fleets of Maestros as panda cars in West Mids Police – white with an enormous blue lamp on the roof. Later we had the more powerful Maestros striped up (jam sandwich livery) as area (Zulu) cars. They were like a smaller version of the Austin 1800 and 2200 cars we had as traffic cars – very roomy. My father also bought one in gold on my recommendation and my wife had a Maestro as a company car – so… good choice!

Mervyn O’Dell - October 9, 2021

Would love to see a Montego version, especially in 1/43 scale.

Ashley Lovering - October 9, 2021

Hi Taff’. Remember driving the Montego the council owned … a roomy car but not in the same league as the Peugeot 405.

My brother bought a red one in 1988. He lived in Brighton but travelled to Tunbridge Wells mon-fri. Some 6ths after purchase and just in time for winter the heater packed up! I don’t think he ever got it fixed but had the car 3yrs with no other problems….! He got it the day before I went to visit and after we had had visited a birthday party near Dorking I got to drive it on the M25 in thick fog.Not a bad machine to drive but to me the best ever model for driving was the Sierra closely followed by the early Mondeo in my humble and unasked for opinion!

Nigel Wright - October 9, 2021

Hi Taff.
Great news that the Maestro is on the way. I had a 1985 C-registration MG 2.0 Efi in Moonraker Blue, which I adored. Fast, spacious, comfortable, economical and reliable. I sold it to my aunt in1989 and she ran it until 2006. Like many others, I hope MG versions and a 1:43 model will eventually appear.

Jos Sint Nicolaas - October 9, 2021

Excellent choice. I drove at that time a red Maestro 1.3L After 4 years I bought a white 1.6HLS. With both cars I had never any problems. I always said: “Proud to drive British in Opel and VW country” (the Netherlands)
I can’t wait to buy these models.
Kind regards

Jim - October 9, 2021

Great choice! I’ll be acquiring one. I had an ‘88 1.6L 5-speed while I was at university and about 6 months after. Very quick in a straight line but jellified with even a 2 degree adjustment to the helm, and the 3rd braking session for the Milton Keynes roundabouts could be exciting due to brake fade. Popped a freeze plug out of the block (wasn’t plated properly and rotted out!) but that and permanent rocker cover leaks aside, it served me well.

John Walker - October 9, 2021

Drove these as the rural ‘panda’ car back in the mid 80’s. I loved it, mind you the alternative was a 998cc very basic Metro!

William Alexander - October 9, 2021

I bought a new MG Maestro- black- and it was a lovely car to drive: the main problem was with the Webber (?) carburettors flooding- if I remember correctly. BL seemingly couldn’t afford an injection system that worked, and obviously lacked the finance to develop their own. What a difference injection would have made! At that time I wanted to buy British and the Maestro was the size of car I needed- up from the 1100 I had. Eventually I sold it to a film stunt driver, and it met a grisly end!

David - October 9, 2021

Wow!

A great model choice, I hope the Oxford range will eventually include the MG 1600 and also a variety of colours. My Dad had an A reg Black MG 1600, would love it to be reincarnated as an Oxford model; A889GPC.

I’m hoping for the Metro in the A and K series variations, in not just the halo top models.
